Instead, what I am doing here is to give you my general comments and thoughts of the series. Otherwise, this article will be a 50 pages long report! geeky face

Astonishing X-men Series:

Astonishing X-men 13 Astonishing X-men 13

Astonishing X-men began in 2004 and the story revolves among the main characters such as Cyclops, Emma Frost, Shadowcat, Colossus, Beast and Wolverine. I only started reading issues from Volume 3 onwards, but I did not feel lost at all.

I am sure the storylines from the previous volumes are somehow related, and of course I would recommend reading the issues from Volume 1.

Bottom-line is that you will be able to pick up the story and make some clever guesses as to what happened in the previous volumes.

However, I felt that most of the attention is concentrated on this small group of X-men. I guess I prefer reading about more mutants as well.

Ultimate X-men Series:

Ultimate X-men 75 Ultimate X-men 75

This series began in 2001 and is still very popular among X-men fans including myself (currently, I am still reading this series).

However, this series is slightly different from the earlier issues of the X-men like the Uncanny X-men because the X-men here do not have any secret identities.

I would like to call it a more modern view and acceptance approach was taken towards making this series; thus, setting it apart from the other ongoing X-men comic books.

New characters also do get introduced in some of the issues, which help to divert your attention away from the main characters every now and then.

The main X-men characters are Professor Charles Xavier, Angel (aka Archangel), Beast, Bishop, Colossus, Cyclops, Dazzler, Iceman, Marvel Girl, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Shadowcat, Storm and Wolverine.

You might still be able to find some second hand issues of the Ultimate X-men at maybe eBay, etc. Otherwise, I strongly suggest getting a digital copy of the full series of the Ultimate X-men which I have as well. It saves a lot of space and you pay so much lesser as compared to buying all the copies.

Uncanny X-men Series:

Uncanny X-men 216 Uncanny X-nen 216

Well, Uncanny X-men (previously titled The X-men) happened to be the first X-men comic book that I started reading. And I knew I was hooked!

The reason why I started reading X-men comic books was because of the 1990s X-men cartoon that was airing on my local television network then - click here to read my article on the 1990s X-men cartoon.

Personally, I feel that the Uncanny X-men series can be quite confusing if you do not start from the beginning. Oh boy Their first issue is dated back to September 1963, so you have a lot of catching up to do!

Most likely, you will not even be able to find issues from the 1960s or 1970s to read unless you have a digital copy of it or you might even have to pay a fortune for it - click here if you are interested to get a digital copy.

I am still stuck at the issues between the 1970s and honestly it can be very difficult to catch up. Blessed with the great advancement in technology, the graphic artwork of the earlier issues is seriously no match for the kind of work that you and I now enjoy.

There are also a lot of characters (the list will be too long for me to write) that were introduced and seriously there are some issues with really good storylines too.

Of course, the graphics at the later issues are much better (thankfully). But I must say that because this is the first X-men series and considering it has been around for so long, it is still definitely worth reading. Just prepare to be a little confused every now and then because I knew I was.

Wolverine Series:

Wolverine 26 Wolverine 26

Who does not know about Wolverine? Due to his great popularity among the X-men fans, Marvel had to create a spin-off series.

In the Wolverine series, be prepared to find out pieces of his origins from the Weapon X programme.

I did not manage to read all the issues of the Wolverine series, but I sure did enjoy reading them. Maybe because I am intrigued by his past and I also love the way he makes sure things get done.

Based on the issues that I have read, the storylines are definitely exciting and attention grabbing! For some particular reason, I especially enjoy how most of the fighting scenes were done in this series.

So now we are back to the golden question: Which X-men comic books should I start reading?

Personally, I really enjoy reading the Ultimate X-men because I feel that the storylines are really good and also have a good dosage of the number of characters as well. So if you are looking for a good mix of solid storylines and characters, then you should choose the Ultimate X-men.

If you wish to go back to where the X-men first started and do not mind getting confused along the way, then you should definitely choose Uncanny X-men. The graphics of the earlier issues might not be that attractive, but they are classic!

Otherwise, if you prefer to concentrate on just a handful of characters from the X-men then you should choose the Astonishing X-men series. I am sure you will be able to pick up the story quite easily if you should choose to skip some of the earlier issues.

Lastly, if you are an absolute big fan of Wolverine then you definitely should read the Wolverine series. Now, that was not too hard to decide right?
